The UK government has announced new entry requirements for EU and EEA freight drivers, set to take effect on 2nd April 2025 as part of its broader border transformation strategy. The changes will require drivers from non-visa national countries to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before entering the UK.

New Requirements for EU Freight Drivers

From April, EU and EEA drivers operating HGVs, LGVs, and vans will need to comply with the updated entry rules. Key requirements include:

  • Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA): Non-visa national drivers, including most EU drivers, must apply for an ETA before travel unless exempt.
  • Mandatory Travel Documentation: Drivers must carry a valid passport, their ETA confirmation (electronically linked to the passport), and relevant driving and vehicle documents.

Impact on Hauliers and Employers

Freight companies and hauliers are urged to prepare for the changes by ensuring their drivers are aware of the new requirements. Employers should:

  • Remind drivers to apply for an ETA well in advance.
  • Confirm that all vehicle and load documentation comply with UK entry rules.
  • Establish internal processes to verify ETA approval before dispatch.

The UK government says the measures are designed to enhance border security while ensuring smoother freight movement. However, industry experts warn that businesses must act now to avoid potential disruptions when the rules come into force.
